Our services
The UHS Psychiatry Clinic staff have specialized training to diagnose and manage significant mental health concerns that cannot be sufficiently addressed in primary care. For example, we often see patients who have tried several psychotropic medications, have a severe mental illness resulting in psychosis or mania, have recently been admitted psychiatrically, or have other complicating factors. We will help you determine if you need to be seen by psychiatry.
Note: We do not provide regular psychotherapy at UHS nor do we provide formal neuropsychiatric testing which may be required for standardized examination accommodations.
Other UHS mental health services can be found here: Mental Health Services.
For any psychiatric emergencies including acute suicidal thoughts, call or text 988.
Who can be seen at the Psychiatry Clinic?
If you are a currently enrolled U-M student on the Ann Arbor campus (for masters, professional school students, or undergraduate students you must be taking classes; PhD students are enrolled year-round) or a UHS Prepaid Plan member student, you can be seen in the Psychiatry Clinic with an appropriate referral (see below).
Do I need a referral? How do I get one?
Yes, a referral is needed to make an appointment at the UHS Psychiatry Clinic. There are multiple ways to get a referral.
- UHS primary care providers are highly skilled in providing mental health care including medication management and can address most mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and basic sleep problems. If they determine you require specialist-level care, they will provide you with a referral to psychiatry at your next primary care visit.
- You may also ask your current CAPS therapist for this referral and they will provide you with one, if appropriate.
- If you have been recently discharged from an inpatient psychiatric unit or the Michigan Medicine Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) for a mental health crisis, they can help you get a referral or schedule with psychiatry if indicated.
How do I make an appointment?
Once you have a referral, call 734-764-8320 to speak with a call center representative. We provide in-person visits on the 3rd floor of the UHS building or video visits via the myuofmhealth portal. Communicate your preference to the representative you speak with.
How much does it cost?
There is no out-of-pocket cost for Psychiatry Clinic visits. Charges are covered by the health service fee while enrolled or if you are between enrollment, or within 1-year post-graduation, you can purchase a UHS Prepaid Plan to cover your UHS clinic visits.
