The Clinical Care Management Team, a collaboration between Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and University Health Services (UHS) and in collaboration with Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) at Michigan Medicine, provides mental health support to students who have been hospitalized and/or visited PES at Michigan Medicine or at other hospitals. We offer support in connecting to therapists off campus, individual therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric follow-up with a team of clinical social workers within CAPS and UHS. Services are available virtually or in person.

Our collaborative model aims to make navigating supports straightforward for students and those who support them during a challenging time for their mental health. Our team will help you determine what supports you need after visiting the hospital, and make those connections at UHS and CAPS, as well as other on-campus supports and/or off-campus supports. Through skills and support, we can help enhance well-being and help students remain able to attend classes and engage academically.
Academic accommodations and support for communicating with professors is provided by the Dean of Students Office, which manages critical incidents and is able to visit students while they are hospitalized. For more information on these academic supports, please visit https://deanofstudents.umich.edu/critical-incidents
Post-hospitalization resources include
UHS Clinical Social Workers partner with you to discuss barriers to care, medical and social needs, and resources that may benefit your health and well-being. These include connection to mental health and campus/community resources; psychoeducation; help navigating the health care system; and coordination of care within and between UHS clinics.
Provided by CAPS clinical therapists with experience in crisis work and post-hospitalization support. We can help you process your experience and its impact as you move forward. CAPS therapists are also familiar with community resources (on campus and off campus) to help you put in place supports you may need.
Skills and support groups offered twice weekly by CAPS clinical therapists. Open for new members each week. Learn and enhance skills for tolerating distress and being hard on yourself. Self-compassion, emotional regulation, and feedback from peers in the group help to support you as you re-engage with life and coursework post-hospitalization.
Some students who are discharged from the hospital or intensive treatment program may be prescribed medication. A UHS Social Worker can work with students and their families to schedule an appointment with a member of the psychiatry or primary care team.
Many students who are discharged from the emergency room, hospital or intensive treatment program can benefit from additional support after discharge. A UHS Social Worker can work with students and their families to support these transitions of care. To contact a member of our team, please contact [email protected].
