U-M students' personal health insurance will be billed for:
- Laboratory testing, except testing for STI, pregnancy and hormonal testing for trans care
- Radiology x-rays and ultrasounds
- Allergy injections
UHS and/or Michigan Medicine (U-M MLabs) will bill students’ insurance, and the insurance policy holder (including parents) may receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from the insurance company detailing the services received at UHS.
As an alternative to billing insurance, students may make payment arrangements on the same day that they receive services with the UHS Patient Billing Office (ground floor). Payment must be made within 30 days.
For lab tests, students may also be responsible for paying any insurance deductible, co-insurance, or any other costs not covered by insurance. There are no co-pays for laboratory tests.
For radiology and allergy injections, there should be no out-of-pocket costs to students.
Does this mean that clinical services are changing?
UHS clinical services are not changing at this time. Students can still receive a wide variety of health care services, including STI testing, at UHS.
Why is UHS making this change?
The change allows UHS to keep the health service fee unchanged this year, despite significant increases in expenses.
Why will Michigan Medicine bill my insurance for UHS lab testing?
MLabs (a unit of Michigan Medicine) processes some lab tests ordered by UHS clinicians. Therefore, Michigan Medicine directly bills students' personal health insurance for those lab tests. Michigan Medicine is committed to providing quality service for insurance and patient billing. See Michigan Medicine Billing and Payment for helpful information including financial counseling resources.
Are there fees for the Sexual Assault Exam?
There are no fees for the Sexual Assault Exam or for lab testing as a result of sexual assault. See Sexual Assault Exam for more information.
Can students get health insurance as an alternative to their parents' plan?
Yes, students can purchase the Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan, which has excellent benefits at a reasonable cost.
